RE: Opinions: Small Companies running Domino ~Wendy Ekwether 13.Jan.03 07:10 PM a Web browser General All Releases; 6.0Windows 2000, Windows NT, Linux - RedHat
I have small clients using Domino with great success. The main advantages are the combined capabilities beyond email that really work for them. They use it for email, as a web server, for a CRM application, and all on the same platform that works as a regular file server.
Performance is just now becoming an issue for them with a soon to be upgraded P2/450 server with 256Mb of RAM.
They have about 12 users, about 500Mb per user in mail, and over 20,000 names in their CRM app., plus another 20Gb of files on the server. Pretty big for a small company.
Combine all that with the relatively low cost of application development / modification and you've got a winner.
If your client just needs email and basic web serving (static pages) then SBS probably makes sense, but anything beyond that and Domino ought to be in the running since the cost of the server is nothing compared to the cost of app development.
